Abbas Kiarostami, Palme d’Or-winning film-maker dies at the age of 76. Born in 1940 in Tehran, Abbas Kiarostami was one of the most important film-makers in cinema history, having been among the new members invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the USA, just a week before his death. Having initially studied painting, Abbas Kiarostami began working as a graphic designer and then turned to cinema.
