The British occupied Aden since 1839, first establishing settlements as a port for the East India Company en route to India. The British pulled their troops on November 30th, 1967, leaving control to the National Liberation Front. Consequently, Southern Yemen became independent, reestablishing themselves as the People's Republic of South Yemen. North and South Yemen were formally united as the Republic of Yemen on May 22, 1990.
