On December 11th, 1981 the worst atrocity of the Salvadoran Civil War occurred when between 900 and 1,200 civilians were murdered in the town of El Mozote, allegedly by government soldiers. Accounts identified that the Atlacatl Battalion, an elite counter-insurgency unit that had been trained by US forces, was deliberately responsible for the systematic killings.
