Long time ruler of the isolated Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea), Kim Jong-il, has died from a heart attack at the age of 69. The “Supreme Leader”, also regularly referred to as “Dear Leader” by his people, assumed control of the country following the death of his father, Kim Il-sung, in 1994.
Widely known for his eccentricities, the repressive leader held a god-like status in North Korea. Following a major famine in the 1990s, Kim Jong-il’s government further militarized though still largely depending on foreign food-aid. Relations with the neighboring Republic of Korea...
