After losing out five times before, Martin Scorsese was awarded his first Oscar. After receiving a Best Director award for "The Departed" the same film won Best Picture.
The Best Actor award was given to Forest Whitaker for his performance in "The Last King of Scotland," in which he portrayed Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. The Best Actress award went to Helen Mirren for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in "The Queen."
"An Inconvenient Truth" won Best Feature Documentary which was received by it's director Davis Guggenheim and former Vice President and environmentalist Al Gore.
