The Democratic Republic of Congo has endured political and social conflict since its independence from Belgium in 1960. At least 5 million people have died since then, mostly due to war, starvation, and disease. In 2009 alone, the UN estimates that more than 800,000 people have been displaced in North and South Kivu provinces as a result of military operations against the rebel factions still active in the countryside.
