Archive - July 20th, 2024 : 50 years since the Turkish Invasion of Cyprus.

On 15 July 1974, the Greek military junta carried out a coup d'état in Cyprus, to unite the island with Greece. In response to the coup, five days later, the Turkish army invaded the island, citing a right to intervene to restore the constitutional order from the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee. However, the Republic of Cyprus is de facto partitioned into two main parts: the area under the effective control of the Republic, located in the south and west of the island, and the north, administered by the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
