For the last ten years, over one hundred thousand rural Vietnamese women have been married to Taiwanese men through brokered marriages. The women come to Taiwan oftentimes with the responsibility to help alleviate financial burdens back home. The ones with unsuccessful marriages end up working for a variety of jobs, including in seedy karaoke parlors where they sing to entertain customers as a means to earn quick money. These photographs were made during a summer Sunday afternoon, 2005, in central Taiwan. The bar was recently closed after a police raid.
