Ian Berry was born in Lancashire, England. In his early twenties, he moved to South Africa, where he was exposed to a great deal of political turmoil, starting with the Sharpeville massacre in March, 1960. After Berry returned to Europe, Henri Cartier-Bresson invited him to join Magnum in 1962. Though assignments have taken him around the world, Berry works out of London.
