Born in Warsaw, Poland, David Szymin adopted the professional moniker "Chim," a French phonetic abbreviation of his surname, upon beginning his career in Paris in 1933. (Later, during World War II, he changed his name to David Seymour to avoid Nazi reprisals against his family in occupied Poland).
