Distro - Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. 1998

Elliott Erwitt

A small town in the south of New Mexico is remarkable for many reasons, the most obvious being it’s name. Originally Hot Springs, New Mexico, the town became part of a major PR campaign by Ralph Edwards for his game show Truth or Consequences. Edwards wanted a town in the US to adopt the game show’s name, celebrating its 10th year on the air. A town vote made it official, and on March 31, 1950 the town’s name was legally changed. The unusual name is bringing more and more visitors to the town each year, and some of the local residents worry that the down home charm of the town will be lost to tourism....
