Distro - Daniel Ortega Elected as President of Nicaragua

Magnum Photographers

On Tuesday November 7, 2006, Daniel Ortega was elected President of Nicaragua. Ortega, 60, first came to power during a 1979 revolution and while serving as president in the 1980's fought the US-backed Contra guerrillas. During that civil war approximately 30,000 lost their lives. Nicaragua has never recovered.
With the election of a left-wing radical to it's presidency, Nicaragua joins a list of anti-US countries in the region which include Cuba, Venezuela, and Bolivia. To say the least, the White House is cautious.
