Larry Towell 

Lurigancho Prison in Peru is one of the most crowded penitentiaries in Latin America. Built in 1964 for 1500 inmates, it interns more than 8500 men today. The risk of contracting the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is 5 to 7 times higher in prison than in the streets. Its transvestite community practices commercial sex inside and nearly 50% of those prisoners are HIV positive. According to the inmates, half of the prison population has sex with other men. On visiting days, an average of 4000 persons enter Lurigancho, including wives, girlfriends and commercial sex workers increasing the spread...
