The United States, concerned about an escalating conflict and the boost in prestige that the siege was providing to PLO leader Yasser Arafat, facilitated an agreement for a cease-fire and the terms for the PLO's withdrawal on August 12, 1982. Arafat left Beirut on August 30, and relocated to Tunisia.
