The Wildlife Conservation Society established the Magellanic Penguin Project in 1982, when a Japanese company planned to slaughter 40,000 Punta Tombo penguins a year and make them into oil and gloves. One woman, penguin specialist Dee Boersma, has discovered the bulk of what is known.
