Patriarch Alexiy II, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church has died at the age of 79. Alexiy was seminal in the church's restoration during the post-Communism period. Though criticized by being ruthless in his treatment of those expressing views contrary to the official views of his church he was greatly admired and respected by members of his congregation.
