The Narmada River in India is in the process of being dammed to provide hydroelectric power. This river is so sacred that a Hindu has only to look at it to be cleansed of all sin. The reservoir will be six times the size of Manhattan affecting 20 million people who live in the basin, 100,000 will have to be resettled. The writer and 1997 Booker prizewinner Arundhati Roy was among the protestors.
