Saturday 27th May 1998. Earthquake hits Afghanistan for the second time in four months.

An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck around the towns of Rostaq and Faizabad in an area close to the Afghan border with Tajikistan.

The earthquake and the aftershocks have set off large numbers of landslides burying more villages. Continued heavy rainfall and difficulties in securing fuel makes rescue efforts difficult and delaying the delivery of food aid.

Estimates say that up to 5000 people have died. Aftershocks are preventing people returning to their homes, as villages are completely...
