The river Thames in London is criss-crossed by a series of bridges: from the Queen Elizabeth 2 bridge (opened in 1991) over the Thames estuary to Battersea Bridge in west London, there are eleven other road and rail bridges in between. As plans for new buildings and a redeveloped Thames waterfront continue in time for the Millenium celebrations, the architect Sir Norman Forster plans to build a 'Millenium bridge', to take pedestrians from St. Pauls steps, by the cathedral, to the old Bankside Power Station on the South Bank, which will re-open as the Tate Gallery's new Museum of Modern Art.
