According to Yemeni folklore,Sanaa was founded by Noah's son Shem and is one of the first sites of human settlement.Legend says that Shem came to Yemen from the north seeking somewhere to settle and chose the place shown to him by a bird.The legend still flourishes in Sanaa and the town bears the nickname "Sam City".
