By refusing to cancel the presidential elections of June 12 and putting all his political weight behind Mahmoud AHMADINEJAD, Ayatollah Ali KHAMENEI has lost his aura as Iran’s Supreme Guide and has become a target of the demonstrators.
Having worked closely with the reform movement, Ayatollah Ali Akbar RAFSANJANI, one of the fathers of the revolution, has been locked in a power struggle with KHAMENEI. Four members of his family have been arrested.
Reformers are now waiting to see RAFSANJANI’s next move.
He is the Chairman of the Assembly of Experts which can dismiss the Supreme Leader.
