Paolo Pellegrin 

Islam has been the main religion of Iran since the Islamic conquest of Persia in the 7th century.

The Iranian revolution of 1979 transformed Iran from a monarchy to an Islamic republic under Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

Today Islam is the religion of 98% of Iranians, of whom approximately 89 % are Shi'a and 9% are Sunni. The changes brought about by the Islamic Revolution are presently found in the country's international reputation; an inspiration for some, a pariah for others; but also in the internal way of life of its citizens.
