The Indian guru, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, has died, after a long and colourful career.

He founded the Transcendental Meditation movement and introduced many in the West to Hindu religion at the height of the Hippie movement in the 1960s.

The Beatles travelled to India to stay at his ashram in Rishikesh, and he influenced a number of other Western pop musicians.

But after his worldwide fame at the height of the counter-culture, he had lived in seclusion in the Netherlands in recent years.
