Magnum Photographers

Los Angeles, California. Acclaimed photographer Helmut Newton died Friday 23 January 2004 after his car crashed into a wall outside the Chateau Marmont hotel. Newton, 83, died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
The photographer was born into a Jewish family in Nazi Germany. His family fled the country in 1938. He bought his first camera at 12 and gained acclaim when he joined French Vogue in 1961. Over the years, Newton established a reputation for a style of fashion photography that was icy and aloof, he was best known for his stark, black and white nude photos of women.
