For years, the Dominican sugar industry has relied on thousands of Haitian workers to cut cane during harvest time. Traditionally, these workers are recruited on both sides of the border by contractors for the sugar estates, who then subcontract the undocumented workers to the plantations. During the sugar harvest these Haitians, who, because they are undocumented, cannot easily travel elsewhere in the Dominican Republic, live in small isolated villages (bateys) that dot the cane fields. Both the workers and their families face the prejudice of Dominican society against those of Haitian descent,...
