Magnum Photographers 

The French general election on the 3rd of May 1936 was won by the 'Popular Front,' a left wing coalition of the Radical, Communist and Socialist parties. They formed a government headed by the Socialist leader Leon Blum. The election triggered a wave of strikes and demonstrations across the country, as workers joyfully awaited changes in their social conditions. The subsequent 'Matignon Agreements' legalised the right to strike, installed a framework of rules for every branch of work, limited the working week to 40 hours and initiated the first paid holidays for workers, reforms that marked the...
