Zimbabwe is strongly affected by HIV/AIDS. The epidemic was declared in 1991, today, more then ten years after, the UNAIDS estimates that 1 out of 4 people are infected by HIV. Each week, in Zimbabwe, 2 000 die of AIDS or from a related illness. Within a population of 12 million, one million children are AIDS orphans. The average life expectancy has dropped from 56 in 1999 to less than 30 in 2003.A sign of the extent the epidemic has reached can been seen is the new graveyards that dot the countryside, authorities are busy building new ones.
