Aamjiwnaang First Nation was established under the Huron Tract Treaty in 1827 and was guaranteed 10,000 acres in perpetuity along the St. Clair River. The Chippewa reservation now comprises only 3,164 acres and is surrounded by the Chemical Valley outside of Sarnia with the highest concentration of petrochemical plants in Ontario. Severe pollution results in chronic health problems and affect way of life of the community. Once a year the members celebrate a traditional pop wow, and once a year they, and local solidarity activists, protest the toxic effects of the Chemical Valley and it effects on the environment.
