As Libyan rebels assert control over Libya, the fate of thousands of sub-Saharan migrants remains dire in a country with a long history of racist violence. Rebels have been careful to avoid taking revenge on fellow Libyans who supported Colonel Qaddafi but instead they have been rounding up and imprisoning hundreds of African migrants for the crime of fighting as "mercenaries" for Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi without any evidence except the color of their skin. Human rights advocates say the rebels’ scapegoating of blacks here follows a similar campaign that ultimately included lynchings after rebels took control of the eastern city of Benghazi more than six months ago.
