28-year-old Sapor Rendall has created an unusual career for herself in a most unlikely location, the first international school of modeling in Cambodia. She fled Cambodia as a child with her adoptive family only to end up in an internment camp for four years in Australia. After surviving the refugee camp she was set free through a dramatic court case, and was married. Sapor began to make a career for herself as a model and eventually returned to Cambodia to open up her own modeling agency. Although there is much controversy over the institution, Sapor believes firmly that Cambodian women need to begin learning how to have confidence in themselves and to be able to interact with the western world with pride. Among the many classes she offers, the most popular are makeup classes, dining skills, and office etiquette. Sapor says, “ We are a war generation,” “Every Cambodian woman knows how to unload and lock-down a gun. Very few have a clue about make up.” During Pol Pot’s regime, applying make up was a capital offence. Women were enlisted as soldiers and expected to fight alongside the men. Life taught Cambodian women how to survive war, Sapor now teaches them how to succeed in the working world.
