INDIA. Bangalore Software Industry. Of the five million people who live and work in Bangalore, India the majority work within the field of information technology, commonly referred to as IT. It has become the heart of India's software writing industry. Starting salaries for Indian professionals are four to five times lower than those of their American counterparts, which has enabled Indian software companies to flourish in the global economy. Indian software writers began to create software, which made use of all the bit and byte from small platforms. Western companies formed alliances and eventually set up their own offices in Bangalore. The new western-style companies such as Infosys, Satyam, Baysoft and Wipro Systems continue to work on creating software packages. Although the underdevelopment of Bangalore leaves questions as to whether it can compete as a world class Information Technology producer, the software boom continues there and it is referred to as the Silicon Valley of India.
