INDIA. Lucknow. Literacy Village.
Marilyn Silverstone
The village was founded in 1953 and is part of a project organized by WORLD EDUCATION INC, which is sponsored by CARE, Carrie Chapman Catt Fund, the Ford Foundation, etc. People from all over the country come to this town to become teachers. In six years 3000 teachers have been formed and have gone back to their communities. 'Tin trunk libraries' go directly to the villages or to the city slums and distribute books to the people. The project was named after Indian poet Tagore.
