Frecnh novelist-philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre was commissioned to write the scenario. Instead of giving the film a straight-forward biographical treatment, several dream sequences of Freud's early patients were included.
As his producer John Huston chose Wolfgang Reinhardt, son of the famous German theatrical producer Max Reinhardt.
The exteriors were shot in Vienna, the interiors in Munich's Bavaria Studios.
