SPAIN. Traditional professional tuna fishing.
Jean Gaumy
From the port of Fuenterabia, the vessel IZARZURI fishes in the Golf of Gascogne. The tuna fish are caught with rods made of fibre or bamboo rods over 5 to 6 meters long. Water is sprayed on the surface of the sea in order to imitate the movement of small fish, which the tuna surface to catch. Bait is thrown to into the spray to attract the tuna. This method of fishing allows a certain amount of tuna to escape, thus not overkilling the shoals of tuna.
