INDIA. Kalaripayatt Martial Arts.

Raghu Rai

A Kalari is a type of gymnasium where the martial art Kalari Payatt is practised. One of the temple arts of Southern India, originating in the 4th century, legend claims that the Kalari was introduced by the sage Parasurama who possessed mystical powers. It is a silent martial art form, where style is of utmost importance. Practised by both men and women, it combines physical, mental, and spiritual practises intended to awaken the dormant human instincts; therfore enabling them to attain hightened levels of realization and enlightenment. Physical training of the various Kalari techniques, as well as instruction in moral conduct is transmitted by a Gurukkal or teacher.
