ARGENTINA. Boersma the Penguin Lady.

Elliott Erwitt

The Wildlife Conservation Society established the Magellanic Penguin Project in 1982, when a Japanese company planned to slaughter 40,000 Punta Tombo penguins a year and make them into oil and gloves. One woman, penguin specialist Dee Boersma, has discovered the bulk of what is known. Boersma holds a teaching post in zoology department of the University of Washington in order to carry out her research at Punta Tombo Beach, which she has done every year for the last 19 years. Boersma attaches identification bands to each penguin from which she can gather basic information about the activities of each bird. Satellite tracking is also used through transmitters, which are about the size of a snickers bar. The transmitter is glued to the lower half of the birds back, where it will create less drag in the water. This enables the researchers to track the migration and feeding habits from miles away. A Magellanic penguin may travel as far as 2,000 nautical miles north in pursuit of food. The birds travel along the same paths every year, and return to the shores of Punta Tombo to mate and hatch their babies. Boersma intends to continue her long-term research for as long as she can find funding
