CEI. RUSSIA. St Petersbourg. April 1993.

Rene Burri

The rest of Russia has been in a complete turmoil since the arrival of President Yeltsin, and his various reforms and political upheavals resulting from the collapse of the Communist regime. Yet St Petersburg (the former Leningrad), the great Baltic port and former residence of the Tsars, and the heart of the Revolution of Oct.1917, destroyed by the Nazis in World War II, is now taking on a more traditional and relaxed way of life. This Venise of north, one of the most visited tourist centers of Russia, continues to be the Grande Dame in the hearts of the Russian. The recent April 25th 1993, nationwide referendum calling the Russian for a vote of confidence for Pres Yeltsin, and a push towards a free market economy, indicted that he had gained the backing of just over half of the Russian, on the 4 issues of the election.
