Photographer Kikuchi made a trip to the ruined city of Hiroshima with a Japanese doctor for the purpose of making a photo record of the city and of the human casualties. At the time, two months after the explosion which had taken place on the morning of the 6th August 1945, Hiroshima was still a devastated, deserted city except for a few huts and shanties that had been put together with odd pieces of material from the ruins.
