INDIA. Delhi. On February 25th, 1993, the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defied para-military forces and held a rally in Delhi in support of an early general election, otherwise not due until 1996, in order to oust prime minister P.V. Narasimha Rao. The para-military forces fired tear-gas into the crowd and sprayed them with water-canons in an attemptto disperse the demonstrators. In the end 25,000 were arrested, including the party's leader, Lal Krishan Advani, as well as another 75,000 outside the capital.
