One of the richest diamond mines in the world was discovered in 1940 by Dr. John Thorburn Williamson, B.A., B.Sc, Ph.D. from Montfort, Quebec, Canada after a six years of prospecting in the coarse grass and the thorn-scrub Sukumaland, Tanganyika. When the vast potential richness was first known, Williamson was offered $5 million for the mine, but he preferred to work it himself, with the help of a small devoted staff. Much of the profit is devoted to the welfare of the employees or turned back into the mine. His compound provides the best living conditions in East Africa for 1,500 employees.
