ISRAEL. The Boy and Girl Army of Young Israel. 1952.
David Seymour
The young State of Israel is unique in having military conscription for both girls and boys, a serive which also involves agricultural and military training. Every Israeli is called up at the age of 18, the boys for 3 years in the Army, the girls (exempt only if they are married) for 2 years. They stay the first year as "Nahal" (Fighting and Pioneering Youth); its badge is a sword/blade and scythe, symbolising a dual purpose of training.
