YUGOSLAVIA. Kosovo

Gilles Peress

In March, 1999, over 1 million Kosovar Albanian refugees fled their homeland for neighboring Macedonia and Albania after diplomacy had failed to quell the conflict between Serbs and ehnic Albanians. In June, after months of airstrikes by Nato, Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic agreed to pull his troops from the region. The complete destruction of many towns and villages will take perhaps decades to rebuild.
