By the mid 20th century, racial tensions were running high, and demonstrations demanding voting rights and school integration were commonplace. Civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. led the fight against people that were against desegregation, such as the KKK. Often the clashes turned into violence with beatings, bombings and in some cases murder. Between 1948 and 1965, over two hundred Black churches and homes in the Deep South were the target of bombings. Martin Luther King and others that followed in his non-violent approach would eventually change the way African Americans were treated in the United States.
