Funeral of David "Chim" SEYMOUR, Port Fouad,Egypt.

Collection Seymour

Three days after the cease fire between Israel and Egypt, on the 10th November 1956, a jeep carrying 2 photographers Jean REY (Paris Match) and David 'Chim' Seymour (assigned to Newsweek) was approaching the Egyptian lines near El Quantara where the exchange of prisoners was taking place which they wanted to photograph. There seemed no reason to take precautions or worry;the cease fire was in operation. But one young Egyptian soldier panicked and suddenly opened fire with a machine gun.The jeep went out of control and plunged into the Sweet Water Canal which runs alongside Suez. Both men died instantly. It was on 29 Oct 1956 that Israeli forces crossed the Egyptian frontier and through the Sinai desert moved towards Suez. Two days later French and British troops bombed Egyptian targets in support of Israel.
