On February 6th 2001 Israel voted for the new Prime Minister. Ehud BARAK, Israel's former Prime Minister and the promoter of several attempts to bring peace to the Mideast, ran against Ariel SHARON, leader of the Likud party, who supported a more conservative program and proposed giving the Palestinians only half as much land as BARAK had offered, in the name of Israel's security. SHARON won with 62.5 percent of the votes.
