SOUTH AFRICA. Basutoland (Lesotho). 1947.

George Rodger

In 1868, Sir Philip Wodehouse, Governor of the Cape Colony, was authorised from London to recognise King Moshesh and his Basuto followers as British subjects. Thereby, Basutoland was the first of the High Commission territories in South Africa to come under British rule. In the past, Basutoland was the scene of much tribal fighting, centering around the mountain of Thaba Bosieu (Mountain of the Night).
