Afghan Women/ Refugees Pakistan for Human Rights Watch

Thomas Dworzak

The civil war between fundamentalist Talibans and the Northern Military Alliance and a three year drought drove many Afghans from the Northern provinces into exile. Having crossed the border into Pakistan they are confronted with an environmental conditions not very different from the ones they were trying to escape: dry, hot conditions with temperatures reaching 38°C in summer. Associated with a lack of proper shelter this results in many cases of dehydration and chlidren, also suffering from malnourishment, are the first victims and die in large numbers. There is no continuity in the relief administered by Non-governmental Organisations as the refugee camp has not been registered by the United Nations, complicating any procedure with the Pakistani authorities.
