ALGERIA. Algiers. W.W.II. Armistice 11 November.

Robert Capa / International Center of Photography

In 1940 Germany invaded France and a pro-German government was established at Vichy, under the direction of Pétain. The republican government, led by Charles De Gaulle, fled to London. During the Summer of 1943 Charles De Gaulle and Henri Giraud founded the French Committee of National Liberation and moved to Algeria (at that point a French colony), to follow the Allied operations and organize the liberation of France.
