30.000 personnes se retrouvent pour un dernier adieu cette même place de la Bastille où elles avaient déjà fêté la victoire des présidentielles de 1981 et 1988. Des milliers de roses, symbole du socialisme, sont déposées près des registres de condoléances.
Sous la pluie, Barbara Hendricks interprète "Le Temps des Cerises" devant l'Opéra Bastille, un des "Grands Travaux" du Président Mitterrand.

Président de la République française de 1981 à 1995, François Mitterrand est mort d'un cancer à Paris, le 8 janvier 1996. Il sera inhumé dans son village natal de Jarnac (Charente) le 11 janvier dans la plus stricte intimité.

30000 people came together for a last farewell to François Mitterrand at the Bastille, where his victories in the presidential elections of 1981 and 1988 had been celebrated. Thousands of roses, the socialist symbol, were placed near the condolences book. In the pouring rain, Barbara Hendricks sang 'le Temps des Cerises' (a song strongly associated with the Paris commune), on the steps of the Bastille Opera, one of the great public works projects carried out under Mitterrand.
President of the French Republic from 1981 to 1995, François Mitterrand died of cancer in Paris on January 8th 1996. His burial took place on 11th January in, Jarnac (Charente), the village where he was born, with access restricted to close friends and members of the family.
