RUSSIA. Siberia. 26 June 2021. Yakutsk New Year Celebrations (Ysyakh) is the most important holiday in Yakutia at the coldest inhabited place on earth. The Yakut celebrate their New Year by worshiping the summer sun, an ancient tradition which symbolizes another start to the year, tracing back to a solar deity and a fertility cult. The summer is short and people ask the sun for a good summer and a good harvest to be able to survive the next hard winter. But the past years summer has become hot and dry, causing devastating wildfires and drought.
